Bipartisan Group of Senators Want Vote on Bill Limiting President’s Emergency Powers
Fifteen senators from both sides of the political aisle penned a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) requesting legislation, referred to as the Article One Act, for consideration by the Senate, “as soon as possible.”
In the letter, the senators asserted the need to end the overreach of the Trump Administration, explicitly mentioning that the, “recent emergency declarations have highlighted the issue.” They also reaffirmed the issue went beyond party lines, stating that the measure is necessary, “regardless of who is President or which party holds a majority.” The senators hope the prospective bill would constitute a, “small, nonpartisan step toward re-establishing the appropriate checks and balances between the Congress and the Executive.”
The legislation, which was passed out of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee in July, would put a halt to future national emergencies after 30 days unless Congress votes to extend them.
