Two New Aerostats in Rio Grande Valley
U.S. Customs and Border Protection recently approved a June release date for two new aerostats in the Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol Sector. Since their initial deployment in November 2013, the three aerostats currently in place have succeeded in both deterring and detecting illegal activity at the border. They have also helped Border Patrol save the lives of immigrants in hostile areas. The aerostats were originally designed as military equipment; after they were no longer needed in Iraq and Afghanistan, CBP acquired the aerostats from the Department of Defense.
