The Immigration and Naturalization Service has announced plans to issue a new more fraud-resistant green card. The wait for the new card to be available has caused longer than usual backlogs in the issuing of green cards. The new cards should be issued before the end of April.

The new cards will have memory stripes that contain the holder’s photograph, birth date and signature embedded in it. INS officials will now be able to swipe the card and see the embedded data on a computer monitor. The new cards also have security features that are being kept secret as well as hard to counterfeit holograms.
