Two guards at the Union County Jail in Elizabeth, New Jersey have been convicted in relation to the beating of a number of illegal immigrants being detained at the facility after they were placed in deportation proceedings. The beatings occurred in 1995 after more than 300 detainees protested the conditions for immigrants in the jail. Nine guards have already been sentenced in relation ot the attacks. Last month, Joseph Werthmann III was found guilty of official misconduct for failing to report or stop the abuse. He faces five to ten years imprisonment. Edward Einhorn was found not guilty on charges he beat the inmates and failed to stop or report the abuse.

Guards allegedly pushed detainees heads into toilets, made them engage in a strip search and forced detainees to kneel naked against other detainees.
