Vice President Al Gore labeled the GOP “mean-spirited” for trying to deny public benefits to legal immigrants and opposing a census procedure designed to more accurately count the number of immigrants in the country. Gore praised the recent move by Congress to restore many of the benefits cut to immigrants under last year’s Welfare Bill. Gore blamed the welfare cuts for causing many immigrants to fail to cooperate with census takes and, consequently, leading to an undercount of millions. Gore favors using a method called “statistical sampling” to more accurately count the number of immigrants. The controversy over this issue also impacted immigrants since this provision is tied up in the same budget bill as Section 245i of the Immigration Act and the census provision is credited with delaying Congress’ approval of the overall legislation.
