The Clinton Administration has announced that it intends to keep the total number of refugee visas available in Fiscal Year 1998 (which begins October 1, 1997) at 78,000. 75,000 numbers are to be divided into various world regions and 3,000 are left unallocated. The visas available for the Former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe have been cut from 49,500 to 46,000. 25,000 of those go to Bosnians and the remaining 21,000 go to refugees from the Former Soviet Union. For the 1997 fiscal year, more than 27,000 refugees came from the Former Soviet Union, less than the 30,000 allocated. Evangelical christians and Jews are the primary beneficiaries of the Soviet refugee allocation.
