Report: Immigration Bill Would Add Nearly 14,000 Jobs per District
ABCnews.com reports that the Senate’s Immigration bill would add between 7,000 and 13,992 new jobs to each congressional district over the next decade. These figures were compiled using data from a Regional Economics Models, Inc. (REMI) study of economic data and new worker visas, as well as data from a Congressional Budget Office report on the impact of the Senate bill. The analysis was generated by the American Action Network (AAN), a center-right organization that backs an overhaul of immigration law. Pro-reform conservatives have emphasized the job-creation potentials of immigration reform in an effort to both convince reform opponents and to win the support of Latino voters. Senator Jeff Sessions, one of the leading opponents of the bill, criticized the REMI report, arguing that newly arrived immigrants would deplete U.S. jobs. Some estimates suggest that the Senate bill would create fewer jobs that the AAN’s estimate. A Social Security actuary’s report on the bill predicted that it would create over 3 million jobs by 2024, as opposed to the AAN’s predicted 6 million.

Indians Third Largest Immigrant Group in US: Study
Business Standard reports that Indian immigrants have emerged (behind Mexican and Chinese immigrants) as the third largest immigrant group in the U.S. According to the Migration Policy Institute, the Indian-American population has grown to over 150 times its size since 1960, when roughly 12,000 Indian immigrants resided in the U.S. Almost a third of Indian immigrants reside in either California or New Jersey, and quarter live in one of three major metropolitan areas: New York, Chicago, and San Jose. Indian students accounted for 13 percent (100,270) of the 764,495 international students studying in the U.S. at institutions of higher learning during the 2011-2012 academic year. Only two percent of unauthorized immigrants are reportedly from India.

Immigration Reform Advocates Arrested in Lower Manhattan During Protest
The Daily News reports that ten immigration reform activists were arrested on August 22nd during a civil disobedience protest in Manhattan. The group, including a professor, a nun, and other clergy, assembled to speak out against the delays in immigration reform. They gathered next to the federal immigration facility at 201 Varick St. House Speaker John Boehner has yet to bring the Senate’s bill to the floor. Republican leaders in the House are promoting separate bills that do not provide a special path to citizenship for illegally present immigrants.
The protesters were asked to disperse, and when they refused, they were each bound by the hands and loaded into a van. All of the protesters were released the same afternoon with summonses for disorderly conduct and a November court date.

One in Five Married Households Has Foreign-Born Spouse
The Pew reports that, according to a report released by the Census Bureau, 21 percent of married households in 2011 had at least one foreign-born spouse. Of these numbers, 61 percent are naturalized citizens and 39 percent are non-citizens. Hawaii had the highest percentage of such households (16 percent), while California, Nevada, and the District of Columbia followed with at least 12 percent. Mississippi, South Dakota, and West Virginia had the lowest percentages, each at 2 percent. 40 percent of foreign born spouses hail from Latin America and the Caribbean, while about one in four were born in Europe or Asia. The general trend for households largely follows immigration and integration trends, the Census Bureau stated. The report did not include same sex married couples.
